Living in Geelong, we are fortunate to be close to some of Australia’s best beaches, if not the world.
Some of you may call the Bellarine Peninsula or the Surf Coast home, maybe enjoying a beautiful view of the sea. Some of us maybe not, but you can still create the same appeal in your home through creative styling. Simply apply the characteristics as mentioned in this blog to achieve the Coastal look, even if living in the inner city.

Influences from nature & culture
The Coastal style is a palette drawn from natural seaside elements and a casual laid-back culture. However, you don’t need to fill your home with ornamental shells or nautical themed prints to achieve this look.

Tracy Caporusso, TILE junket’s resident Interior Designer recommends using the following elements in your hard surfaces:
- Blues
- Whites
- Greens
- Distressed Wood
Below are some tile palettes with the characteristics of a Coastal abode created by Tracy.

Light Open Space
Just as the seaside represents natural light, open space and natural fibres, these concepts should be incorporated into your coastal styling.

White reflects and enhances light and creates sense of space. Use pale neutrals as your base colour and if desired, use an accent of turquoise, navy, coral or other contrasting colour representing the coast. Artwork or accessories can be used this way, but don’t over do it.

If you are lucky enough to have a view, maximise on it with bi-folding doors or windows. Otherwise a large mirror positioned correctly can emphasise light and space in your room.

Creating an ambiance
Casual furniture including wicker and distressed timber, sheer floaty curtains and fresh linens all evoke the harmony of the seaside too.

The coastal look should set a relaxing, calming ambiance in your home. Whether styling your main place of residence or holiday home, this style of interior is one that can be enjoyed by the seaside or inner city – be inspired by more Coastal interiors on Pinterest.
