“And the award goes too…”
To be acknowledged as a business of excellence in our local region by fellow Geelong business leaders is an accomplishment to be proud of.
In 1986 the Geelong Business Excellence Awards were established to recognise and celebrate local business achievements and performance.
Earlier this year our team entered the Awards for the first time.
The experience was one to reflect on the performance and achievements of our business. Whatever the result, we embraced the process, one that would be a business ‘health check’.
Writing the submission was a challenge – limited to a 500 word count per criteria about your business, your ‘baby’, the blood, sweat and tears (and fun) that makes your business excellent. But lucky for us – we love a challenge!
On the night of Thursday 17 July, our team attended the Gala Awards Presentation Dinner at The Pier Geelong. With over 500 guests in attendance, it was an extravagant affair.

Geelong Mayor Darryn Lyons praised and applauded the entrants in the audience; “to all the brave businessmen and women who had the guts to take a chance, the guts to back their own judgement and the guts to put themselves on the line.”

So what was the result for us?
With over 90 entrants, we were ecstatic to be nominated as Finalists for Retail Award and Family Business Award – Second Generation or more. This is confirmation as business development goes; we are heading in the right direction.
What were the 3 things we took from our experience as an entrant:
- There is always something you can do to improve your business
- The team has a unique and valuable perspective, so include their contribution
- Arising from the challenges of difficult times, Geelong businesses are becoming more innovative, customer focused and of higher quality
What does this mean to you as a consumer?
You can be confident many local Geelong businesses have you, their customer, front of mind. Well we certainly do and we thank you for supporting our business and helping us strive towards business excellence in Geelong.
